Affordable but with poor support for PAL consoles.
Although the HDMI Mod Kit can be used with PAL consoles without any problems, the video output is of questionable quality.
It seems to me that the PAL 288p 50Hz signal is first downsampled to 240p 60Hz and then upscaled to 720p for output.
The result is a 720p image that is displayed in the correct 4:3 aspect ratio (surprisingly, the PAL bars are avoided by vertically compressing the image), but the scaling produces highly unsightly horizontal and vertical scaling artifacts. There’s an unsightly black border around the entire image, and the content looks interpolated and downscaled—blurry yet still pixelated. On top of that, there’s constant image judder because PAL 50Hz is upscaled to 60Hz, which is what causes this judder in the first place.
Conclusion:
A great feature for NTSC consoles, but with clear weaknesses when it comes to PAL consoles.
In terms of value for the money, the HDMI kit is unbeatable.
In terms of quality, the kit delivers good picture quality for 240p content. However, it appears that there is no true 3x integer scaling to 720p; it looks more like bilinear scaling with slight blurring.
With 480i content, however, the kit completely fails. It appears that no deinterlacing is performed at all. During video output, the first field is apparently buffered and then displayed simultaneously with the second field. The result is a sort of “weave” deinterlacing with severe comb artifacts during horizontal movement and a halved frame rate. Fortunately, there are only a few N64 games that output in 480i, mostly in conjunction with the “Expansion Kit” RAM expansion module.
As for sound output, the old bug involving swapped stereo channels has finally been fixed. The left and right stereo channels are now output correctly and are no longer swapped.
Overall, it's good—especially the value for money is unbeatable.
BUT
With HDMI audio output, the audio channels are reversed. The left stereo channel is output to the right speaker and vice versa.
This issue cannot be resolved either in the Mod-Kit’s OSD settings or in the TV’s own settings.
I have contacted support regarding this and am waiting for a response and a solution to this problem.
Great customer service
Relatively easy to install.
The ability to adapt the video signal to different monitors and TVs (zoom level) is convenient. What I don't understand is why the zoom levels change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 (there's a monitor or TV function to widen the view). I also would have preferred the video signal to maintain its original resolution, rather than being forcibly scaled to 720p.
